Do you know the reason for the high temperature of the power inductor?
Oct 13, 2023
Power inductor is a common type of inductor product and has a wide range of applications in many electronic products. Recently, it has been discovered that there are also many questions about power inductors. For example, in recent days, a question that has been frequently consulted is: What is the reason for the high temperature of power inductors? Is it because the recent sustained high temperature has also had an impact on the power inductance? Don't worry, this article will reveal the truth for you!
First of all, I would like to explain a problem to everyone: if your power inductor is too hot during use, do not throw this "pot" at the continuous high temperature in recent days! High temperature may have a certain impact on it, but it is definitely not the fundamental cause of the problem. When analyzing problems, it is necessary to see the essence through the phenomenon, only in this way can the problem of high power inductor temperature be fundamentally solved.
In fact, not only power inductors, but also other inductor products, such as common mode inductors, color ring inductors, magnetic ring inductors, and integrated inductors, can generate heat during use. Firstly, it is important to clarify that the heating of power inductors is a normal phenomenon, but the temperature must be within a reasonable range. When we conduct inductance quality testing, there is an indicator data called temperature rise current, which intuitively reflects whether the inductance is excessive at a reasonable value. If the temperature rise current is within 45 degrees, then the excessive power inductance is normal and there is no need to worry; If the temperature rise current exceeds 45 degrees, then there is a problem with this power inductor.
The temperature of the power inductor is too high, and based on past project case experience, it can be detected and confirmed from the following two aspects:
(1) Is the customer's inductance selection plan correct? This means that the customer's case is suitable for using power inductors. There are many cases of selecting the wrong type of inductance. This involves the circuit board design issue of the project case;
(2) If the selection is confirmed to be correct, it means that there is a problem with the quality of the power inductor used. In this case, either the supplier is required to control the quality of the power inductor or the supplier is replaced.
